BEST WAY TO TACKLE CARPET STAINS
Food, drink, makeup and even paint, these are just a few of the things that end up staining our carpets and making them look unsightly and unloved.
Prevention is always better than the cure but sometimes accidents happen, and you can’t help that! There are a few ways to you can combat stains at home.
Before we get onto the best way to tackle carpet stains lets talk about the common mistakes we make when trying to remove them.
The three most common mistakes when dealing with stains:
- Over Soaking the affected area
One common mistake is to over-soak the affected areas with water and cleaning solutions. Doing this will make the small stain bigger and can make it even harder to remove.
- Rubbing the stain
Even though rubbing it may seem like you are removing the stain it’s not, instead, this will damage the texture of your carpet fibres and make it harder to clean, so don’t rub it, however tempting it is.
- Wetting a dry soil stain
If you have a dry stain on the carpet another big no is to wet the stain. Instead, run a vacuum cleaner over the spot and make sure you extract as much of the dirt as possible.
Now you know this, we can move onto the best way to clean stains from your carpet.
When dealing with food and beverage spills on your carpet, the key is not to panic. These things are inevitable if you have small children, pets and even guests at home.

Always remember that the sooner you treat the stained spot the better chance you have of avoiding a permanent stain on your carpet or rugs.
Step 1
Remove as much of the excess stain as possible, if it is a wet stain then blot the area gently with a clean dry cloth If the stain has already dried up, vacuum the area to extract as much of the dirt as p possible. If the stain is semi-solid, scrape it with a spoon or a dull knife.
Step 2
Blot the affected with cold water, no need to use a cleaning solution at this stage, blot until you take the dirt out then use a clean cloth to blot it again until dry.
Step 3
Take half a teaspoon of washing up liquid and a cup of tepid water and make into a thick foam. Before launching into cleaning the affected area, test it out on an inconspicuous area of the carpet first to see if there is not harmful reaction if the carpet fibres, if not proceed to apply the soapy foam to the stain with a sponge or a clean cloth. Do this using a circular motion. Start from the edges of the spot and continue to its centre. If you start from the centre, you will risk spreading it.
Step 4
Blot the area again with cool water to rinse. Finally, blot with a clean towel to dry the spot completely.
